Athletes, Families & Local Programs
Athletes All the programs offered in New Hampshire provide athletes with the chance to develop physical fitness, sports skills, social skills and self-esteem. Athletes train for a minimum of eight weeks and compete in Regional and State events. Seven state tournaments, including Summer and Winter Games, allow the athletes to show their skills. Children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. They grow intellectually, socially and spiritually and, through their activities, exhibit boundless courage and enthusiasm, enjoy the rewards of friendship and ultimately discover not only new abilities and talents but "their voices" as well.
Families Families know that Special Olympics boosts athletes' self-esteem and belief in their abilities so that they can become an intricate part of their community whether that is at home, at school or in the workplace.
Local Programs
Special Olympics New Hampshire has more than 100 Local Programs throughout the state. Local Programs are volunteer run and are the reason SONH is able to serve so many athletes within the state. Local Programs vary in size but each has a Local Program Coordinator (LPC) who oversee their program. Local Program Volunteers support their program in various roles such as a chaperone, coach, and/or Unified partner. Each Local Program is responsible for raising funds to support costs associated with running a program, which includes transportation, facility fees, equipment and team uniforms.
