Unified Sports is a program that combines approximately equal numbers of Special Olympics athletes with athletes without mental challenges (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. Age and ability matching of athletes and partners is specifically defined on a sport by sport basis.
Special Olympics New Hampshire offers the following year-round Unified Sports Competitions:
Winter Games Sports Floor Hockey-The lineup includes three Special Olympics athletes and three partners on the court at once. Cross Country-4x100 Relay
Basketball Tournament Full Court-The lineup includes three Special Olympics athletes and two partners. Half Court-The lineup includes two Special Olympics athletes and one partner.
Summer Games Sports Athletics-Two Special Olympic athletes and two partners run a 4 X 400-meter relay. Soccer-The lineup consists of three Special Olympics athletes and three partners.
Unified Sports Weekend Golf-One Special Olympics athlete and one partner play five, nine or eighteen holes alternating shots played. Team Softball- Five Special Olympics athletes and five partners make up a team.
Fall Games Sports Volleyball-The lineup consists of three athletes and three partners. Bowling-Partners alternate frames for a combined total score. Both scores are added together at the end of competition.
