2011 has been a great year for Special Olympics New Hampshire!
We had more than 3,500 athletes training and competing in 21 sports this year. We also were excited and proud to have two athletes, two coaches, two officials and a member of law enforcement represent our state and the country at the World Summer Games in Athens, Greece! This year we partnered with the NHIAA giving students with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to represent their school through NHIAA Unified Sports.
These accomplishments along with the re-introduction of our Young Athletes Program, a new Athlete Leadership curriculum, and free health screenings for our athletes are just some of our achievements this year.
All of the things Special Olympics New Hampshire was able to accomplish is due to the support of people like you. To our sponsors and donors, to our volunteers and fans, to our athletes and their families - thank you for helping make 2011 a great success!
Best wishes to you and your family this Holiday Season!
From the staff at SONH

New ALPs Curriculum Introduced at Volunteer Leadership Weekend
At the 2011 Volunteer Leadership
 | | ALPs Participants |
Weekend (VLW), December 2-4 at Waterville Valley Resort, SONH Local Program Volunteers sharpened their coaching skills and took part in classes on fundraising, creating websites and an introduction to SONH, while our athletes were introduced to three new additions to the Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) curriculum including Governance, Technology and an Introduction to the program.
ALPs are an opportunity to involve Special Olympics athletes in a non-traditional component of Special Olympics. ALPs provide training and support for athletes who desire to expand their participation in Special Olympics both on and off the competition field. Through ALPs, athletes receive training and have opportunities to hold positions of leadership and influence. In these roles, athletes help determine policy and set direction for Special Olympics.
In addition to the new curriculum SONH will continue to have an Athlete Representative to the Board, the Global Messenger Program, and the Athlete Input Council in 2012. |

Special Olympics New Hampshire Introduces Unified Sports Days

Unified Sports Days (USD) will add further opportunities for high school students with intellectual disabilities and their non-disabled peers to unify their school. The Unified Sports Days are part of Special Olympics New Hampshire's (SONH) Project UNIFY® opportunities for high schools and the project is a collaborative initiative between New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) and SONH.
The project is made up of several components that are aimed at activating youth and affecting change in high schools throughout New Hampshire. Unified Sports Days will bring together students with and without intellectual disabilities to engage in activities throughout the day including volleyball, floor hockey, Pin Guard, and Zumba®.
MJ Hippern, a Wellness Teacher at Dover High School piloted the first Unified Sports Day last year and she will be managing the Unified Sports Days for SONH in 2012. Hippern has been teaching a Unified Wellness class for five years at Dover High School and the Unified Sports Days are an expansion of that work. Hippern said that teaching the Unified Wellness class has renewed her enthusiasm and love of teaching.
The Unified Sports Days will be hosted by area colleges and universities through a collaboration between division III Student Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC) and Special Olympics. The first Unified Sports Day will take place on January 11, 2012 at New England College in Henniker, followed by another at Plymouth State University on February 15th and UNH on February 24th.
For more information, please contatct MJ Hippern at (603) 767-7833 or via email at m.hippern@dover.k12.nh.us. |
