The David Storace Memorial Award is named in honor of David Storace, a Special Olympics athlete from 1971 to 2005. The award is presented annually to an athlete that participates in the sport of aquatics and best exemplifies who David Storace was. The award is presented in the aquatics venue at Summer Games - and this year's recipient was Caitlin Harris of the Mt. Washington Valley Dolphins.  Congratulations Caitlin!

Helfrich and Bunszel along with SONH coaches Butch Beers of Drewsville and Robin O'Dougherty of Hillsboro will join more than 400 members of Team USA on Saturday in Baltimore, Maryland before flying to Greece on Sunday, June 19th.  The World Summer Games will be the largest sporting event in the world this year and will bring together 7,500 athletes and 2,500 coaches from 185 nations around the world.

Helfrich is a 24 year old athlete from Henniker, NH and he will be competing in the Pentathlon in Athens. The Pentathlon is a combination of five events which include the 100 meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, and the 400 meter run. Helfrich has participated in Special Olympics for 16 years and is excited to attend the World Games, and is "looking forward to making new friends and traveling to a meaningful biblical country where the first Olympics took place." He says: Special Olympics has changed his life by allowing him to make a lot of new friends and learn about volunteering.

Bunszel will be competing in the sport of Bocce while in Greece. Bunszel, a 51 year old athlete from Keene has been involved in Special Olympics for 40 years, and is looking forward to competing at the World Games, and supporting her team and country. The 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games will be held from June 25th - July 4th in Athens, Greece, the birthplace of modern sport.

Every two years, thousands of Special Olympics athletes worldwide come together to showcase their athletic skills and celebrate the spirit of Special Olympics.  Alternating between Summer Games and Winter Games, Special Olympics World Games bring public attention to the talents and capabilities of people with intellectual disabilities.

Summer Games A Huge Success

The Special Olympics New Hampshire (SONH) Summer Games were held on June 3rd and 4th at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.  The 42nd annual event hosted 966 participants in seven sports including aquatics, athletics, bocce, cycling equestrian, powerlifting and tennis.

In the evening of Friday, June 3rd athletes, coaches, volunteers, families and fans gathered on Memorial Field for the Opening Ceremonies of the Summer Games.  As athletes and coaches marched onto the field they were introduced by the chairman of the SONH Board of Directors, Scott Kalicki and Special Olympics athlete and member of the SONH Board of Directors, Scott McCullough.

Thank You LETR

The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is a huge supporter of Special Olympics New Hampshire. At Summer Games they handed out awards to athletes, participated in the LETR Cruiser Parade at Opening Ceremonies and carried the Flame of Hope to Durham.

The Flame of Hope arrived at Cowell Stadium on the campus of UNH on Saturday, June 3rd.  More than 60 runners led by New Hampshire's chief law enforcement officer, Attorney General Michael Delaney carried the Torch into the stadium.  The arrival of the Torch was the culmination of more than 800 miles across the Granite State.

Following the arrival of the Flame of Hope the Durham Police Department hosted a BBQ for the runners, and the law enforcement agencies prepared for the Cruiser Parade later that evening.

Thank you to all the law enforcement agencies that were able to attend the Cruiser Parade, including the Police Departments from: Alton, Bedford, Belmont, DARE/Laconia, Durham, Fremont, Henniker, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Salem, Seabrook and the UNH Police. Additionally, thank you to the Sheriffs Departments of Cheshire County and Merrimack County as well as UNH Special Operations.

Congratulations to the Henniker Police Department on earning bragging rights for a year as their law enforcement vehicle won the title of Best Cruiser at Summer Games!

We thank the members of law enforcement who volunteer year round to raise money for SONH and  for their continued support of our athletes!
