YAP in New Hampshire
The Young Athletes Program™ (YAP) is a sports play program for children with intellectual disabilities ages two through seven, designed to introduce them to the world of sports prior to Special Olympics eligibility for competition at age eight.
The program is designed to address two specific levels of play: Level 1 includes physical activities that focus on developing motor skills and hand-eye coordination; Level 2 concentrates on the application of these physical skills through sports skills programs. Overall, the program activities are designed to help children with disabilities improve physically, cognitively and socially. Young Athletes is also fun and appropriate for children without disabilities. Many Young Athletes Programs serve as an opportunity for children with and without disabilities to play and interact together.
In September, we introduced you to Bill Jones our new YAP Coordinator, since that time Bill has been working on implementing the Young Athletes Program throughout New Hampshire. In addition to building new programs, Bill is working on rebuilding YAP locations that discontinued over the last two years.
The Young Athletes Program in New Hampshire is a great introduction for athletes and their parents to Special Olympics, and while athletes are the primary focus and beneficiary of the program, benefits extend to family members in many ways such as, a social network with other parents and improved connection with their athlete, among other benefits.
If you're interested in being part of the Young Athletes Program as a parent, coach or volunteer please contact Bill Jones at BillJ@sonh.org or by telephone at 603-624-1250 x33.

Unified Soccer Ends. Basketball Begins.
The New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) and Special Olympics New Hampshire (SONH) completed the first season of Unified High School Soccer with the State Championship on Saturday, November 5th. The finals featured Spaulding High School vs. Laconia High School at Southern New Hampshire University. Spaulding won the game 5-1 and both teams were awarded a plaque for their school along with medals, these are the same awards that every other high school that competed in a soccer championship received.
The title match was the culmination of a six game pilot season that featured more than 70 student athletes on four high school teams from Dover, Laconia, Oyster River and Spaulding. The Unified Sports opportunities will continue in the winter and spring sports seasons with basketball and track & field.
With the winter season approaching, 12 schools including: Epping, Oyster River, Laconia, Spaulding, Dover, Pinkerton, Goffstown, Londonderry, Portsmouth, Profile, Nashua South, & Lin-Wood have already registered for the upcoming basketball season. The season will feature a two week pre-season starting in December followed by a six week long regular season that will begin in January culminating with the playoffs and championship in March.
If your school is interested in signing up for NHIAA Unified Basketball there is still time, the deadline to register is November 30th, please contact Tricia Messler (SONH Manager of the NHIAA) at TriciaM@sonh.org or by phone at (603) 494-0987 for more information.
