In New Hampshire, schools are leading the way in creating inclusive environments through the Unified Champion Schools (UCS) program. These schools provide opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities to learn, play, and lead together. To recognize the schools that go above and beyond, two prestigious banner programs celebrate their commitment to inclusion:

National Banner Schools: A Symbol of Excellence

The National School Recognition Program honors schools that meet 10 national standards of excellence in three key areas:

  1. Unified Sports – Providing inclusive athletic opportunities where students with and without disabilities compete together.
  2. Inclusive Youth Leadership – Encouraging students to take on leadership roles to promote a culture of inclusion.
  3. Whole School Engagement – Creating school-wide activities that foster an inclusive mindset among all students and staff.

Schools that meet these high standards receive the prestigious Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools National Banner, recognizing them as models of inclusion.

Most recently, three New Hampshire schools have earned this national distinction:

Plymouth Regional High School
Portsmouth High School
Keene High School

Their commitment to Unified Sports, leadership, and whole school engagement has set a powerful example for other schools across the state.

Granite State Unified Champion Banner Schools: Recognizing Local Excellence

While the national recognition is a significant achievement, New Hampshire also celebrates local schools through the Granite State Unified Champion School of Excellence Program. This program honors schools that go beyond the UCS framework to create truly inclusive school communities, also meeting 10 standards of excellence. These schools serve as statewide leaders in Unified programming, demonstrating exceptional commitment to fostering an environment where all students belong.

Recent New Hampshire Granite State Banner Schools include:

Laconia High School
Campton Elementary School
John Stark Regional High School
Hanover High School

Each of these schools has demonstrated a deep commitment to creating a culture of inclusion, respect, and opportunity for all students.

The Impact of Banner Schools in New Hampshire

Earning a National or Granite State Banner is about more than just an award—it represents a school-wide culture of belonging, acceptance, and inclusion. These schools are leading the way, proving that Unified Champion Schools aren’t just programs—they are movements that transform entire communities.

As more New Hampshire schools work toward these prestigious recognitions, the impact of inclusion continues to grow, making a lasting difference in the lives of students across the state.
