Guardians of the Flame: New Hampshire Officers Represent at the 2025 International Law Enforcement Torch Run Conference
The Flame of Hope was shining bright in Minneapolis!
This October, law enforcement officers and Special Olympics representatives from around the world gathered in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the 2025 Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) International Conference. The annual event celebrates the powerful partnership between law enforcement and Special Olympics while providing opportunities for learning, collaboration, and inspiration.
Representing New Hampshire this year were Steve Dennis (NH State Fire Marshal’s Office), Josh Beauchemin (NH Liquor Enforcement), and RJ Bassett (Laconia Police Department) — three passionate leaders who continue to carry the mission of inclusion, respect, and support for every athlete. 🙌
“We’re loving every moment at the Special Olympics LETR conference in Minnesota! The energy, the kindness, and the purpose here are truly unmatched!”
— Steve, Josh, and RJ

A Global Movement of Inclusion
The Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) began in 1981 when Wichita Police Chief Richard LaMunyon had a simple yet powerful idea: unite law enforcement officers in support of Special Olympics. What started as a local run has since grown into a worldwide movement spanning more than 100,000 officers in over 40 countries.
Known as the Guardians of the Flame, LETR members carry the Flame of Hope into Special Olympics events across the globe — a symbol of courage, inclusion, and unity. Their efforts go far beyond fundraising. By volunteering, organizing events, and raising awareness, they help create communities where everyone is respected and celebrated for their abilities.

The Torch Burns Bright in New Hampshire
The Torch Run was brought to New Hampshire in 1985 by Chief Stevens (ret.) of Wolfeboro, and over the past 41 years, local law enforcement has raised more than $7.8 million to benefit Special Olympics New Hampshire.
But the impact of LETR in New Hampshire extends far beyond dollars. Through countless volunteer hours, event participation, and in-kind support, our law enforcement community has built lasting bonds with athletes and families across the state. Whether running side-by-side in the annual Torch Run, plunging into icy waters during our Winter Water Sports, or cheering from the sidelines at competitions, New Hampshire’s Guardians of the Flame embody the true spirit of inclusion.

Together, these dedicated officers — in New Hampshire and around the world — remind us that when law enforcement and Special Olympics unite, the world shines brighter with hope, respect, and acceptance for all.
