Improving Safety Through Understanding
New Resource Helps Keep Our Community Safe: Contact Person Notification Program
At Special Olympics New Hampshire, we know that our law enforcement partners are more than just community protectors — they’re part of our SONH family. From carrying the Flame of Hope to presenting athletes with their awards at competitions, members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) are among our biggest supporters.
Now, a new statewide initiative offers another way to strengthen that connection and ensure safety for everyone: the Contact Person Notification Program, created by the New Hampshire Department of Safety.
This voluntary program allows individuals—or their legal guardians—to share important information with law enforcement that can help ensure clearer, safer communication during an encounter.
It’s designed for individuals who may have difficulty communicating due to a disability or medical condition, such as an intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, dementia, or certain mental health conditions. The program helps officers better understand the person they’re interacting with and provides contact details for someone who can assist with communication.
By working together — families, athletes, and our law enforcement friends — we can continue to build understanding, promote inclusion, and keep every member of our community safe.
