Where It All Began: A Love Story from the Lanes
March 10, 2026
For many athletes, Special Olympics is where they discover confidence, friendship, and a community that believes in them. For Shane and Eliza, it is also where they found something even more unexpected.
They met in 1998 on the Dover Mighty Seals swim team.
Practice days meant time in the pool working on strokes, cheering on teammates, and spending time with friends who shared the same love of sport. Somewhere along the way, Shane noticed Eliza and gathered the courage to join her and her friends during practice.
That moment on the pool deck was the start of something special.
Not long after, Shane asked Eliza out on their first date at a local restaurant. What began as a connection through swimming grew into a relationship that would span decades.
Their story is a powerful reminder of what sport can create. Special Olympics is about competition and training, but it is also about community. It is where athletes meet teammates who become lifelong friends, mentors who become family, and sometimes, partners who change everything.
Over the years, Shane and Eliza continued building their relationship while staying connected to the Special Olympics community that first brought them together.
In June of 2012, Shane brought their story full circle with a moment they will never forget. At Henry Law Park in Dover, he proposed and Eliza said yes.
Now, they are counting down the days until this June, when they will be surrounded by family and friends as they begin the next chapter of their journey together.
Stories like Shane and Eliza’s remind us that the impact of Special Olympics goes far beyond the field of play. Every practice, every competition, and every team creates opportunities for connection.
Sometimes those connections lead to stronger athletes.
And sometimes, they lead to a lifelong partnership that started with a shared lane in the pool.
