Fall Mountain and Upper Valley Hawks make history at SONH’s first Mini-Meet

March 31, 2026

When the traditional season came to a close, the Fall Mountain Special Olympics program and the Upper Valley Hawks weren’t quite ready to be done.

Because for these athletes, the season isn’t just a schedule—it’s something they build toward, show up for, and pour themselves into week after week.

So instead of letting it end, they created something more.

On March 14, inside Fall Mountain High School, six teams came together for a day of competition that felt every bit as meaningful as any championship event. The gym was full, the energy was high, and from the first whistle to the final buzzer, it was clear—this was about more than just one more game.

It was about giving athletes another chance to compete.
Another chance to be part of a team.
Another chance to feel that moment when everything clicks.

And they made it happen.

A Day Built by the Community

This wasn’t just a game day—it was something thoughtfully built from the ground up.

Led by leadership from both local programs, the event brought together three teams from Fall Mountain and three teams from the Upper Valley Hawks. What followed was a series of games that showcased not only the skills athletes had been sharpening all season—but the spirit that defines Special Olympics.

You could see it everywhere:

The bleachers were packed, filled with families, friends, and supporters who showed up ready to cheer—and they delivered. Every basket, every hustle play, every moment was met with a roar that echoed through the gym.

More Than One More Game

For many athletes, this day meant something deeper.

It was a chance to put their winter training into action one more time.
A chance to hear their name called, to wear their uniform, to compete alongside their teammates.

And when the games wrapped, first and second place ribbons were awarded based on competition results—earned through the athletes’ performance, teamwork, and dedication on the court.

But what stayed with them went far beyond that.

The feeling of the crowd.
The connection with teammates.
The pride of stepping onto the court and giving it everything.

That’s what they’ll carry forward.

The Heart of It All

Moments like this don’t happen by accident.

They happen because coaches, volunteers, and local leaders believe deeply in what these athletes deserve—and are willing to go the extra mile to make it happen.

They happen because programs come together, not just to compete, but to create something meaningful for their athletes.

And they happen because athletes show up, ready to give their best, every single time.

What took place in that gym wasn’t just a continuation of a season.

It was a reflection of what makes this community so strong.

Looking Ahead

By the end of the day, there were tired legs, full hearts, and plenty of smiles.

Every athlete walked away proud—not just of how they played, but of what they were part of.

Because this wasn’t just about extending a season.

It was about making sure every athlete had one more chance to shine.

And if this day proved anything, it’s this:

When a community comes together with purpose, the game always finds a way to continue.
