The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 when Wichita, KS Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to raise funds for and increase awareness for Special Olympics.
The LETR transforms communities by inspiring people to open their minds, to accept and include people with intellectual disabilities, celebrating differences among all people recognizing and respecting the similarities we all share. For athletes and officers alike, the Torch Run is a story of success, love, respect and commitment between law enforcement officers and Special Olympic athletes.
The LETR is not only a run, it is a year-round fundraiser and awareness campaign. There are many events that involve law enforcement professionals all over the Granite State from handing out medals to athletes at competitions, to jumping in Lake Winnipesaukee in March, to serving customers at a local restaurant for “tips/donations”.
The partnership between SONH and New Hampshire Law Enforcement began in 1984. During those 41 years, the agency officials have raised more than $6 million and continue to be role models, mentors and friends to our 3,000+ athletes. SONH would not be where we are today without the dedication and support from Law Enforcement Officials and Agencies around the state.
