Unified Sports

Unified Sports® joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way for preconceptions and false ideas to be swept away.

Unified Sports events are offered in sports ranging from soccer to basketball to golf.  Unified Sports athletes improve their physical fitness, sharpen their skills, challenge the competition and have fun too!

Impact of Unified Sports
There are several positive effects on both athletes and partners involved in Unified Sports. The most profound effects on athletes are increased self-esteem and sports skills. In a study of Special Olympics athletes, 96% report feeling better about themselves after participating.

The effects on partners are similar to the effects on athletes. When asked the same questions regarding self-esteem and sports skills, 90% of partners report feeling better about themselves after participating. A strong majority (85%) also say their sports skills improved.

Family members were also asked about their satisfaction with the program. Almost all family members (98%) say they would recommend the program to another family.
